COMEAU-COURTLOT, Alexis (I35169)

2 His wife was Marie Pesseley, born c1645, the youngest chil d of Isaac Pesseley and Barbe Bajolet, both French. Going b y Marie’s age and the ages of the children in the 1671 cens us, she and Jean were probably married at Port Royal c1665.
Marie's parents had arrived in Acadia around 30 years earli er, but her mother returned to France after her father wa s killed on 16 April 1645 in the attack on Fort St. Jean. I t is unknown if Marie was born in Acadia or if she was bor nr her mother had returned to France, but her grandso n Claude Marc's declaration at Belle-Ile-en-Mer claimed Par is as her birthplace. After being widowed twice more, Barb e Bajolet, and certainly her two youngest children Marie Pe sseley and Marie Anne Lefebvre, returned to Port Royal in 1 661.

5 This information came from Lawrence Roberts off the internet:

Came to New France in 1659 aboard the "St-Andre", which had been commissioned by Jeanne Mance to bring emigrants to Montreal. The ship departed LaRochelle, France on July 22, 1659 and arrived September 29, 1659. The St-Andre sailed froance to New France in 1659. Many of those on board had been recruited by Jeanne Mance in France for employment at the Hotel Dieu in Montreal.

Truteau, Etienne, born June 8, 1641 in Ste-Marguerite, city of La Rochelle, carpenter of large projects was employed on June 8, 1659 for three years at 100 livres per annum by M. de la Dauversiere acting for M. de Queylus (gr. Demontreau). Ene, as a soldier of the 6th escouaide in 1663, was one of the heros of combat of May 6, 1662, he was noted as a concessionaire on December 7, 1665 (according to E. -Z. Massicotte). A much sought after carpenter, Etienne Truteau built many of the residences of early Montreal. He joined with master masons in his capacity as a carpenter of large projects. Thus, on February 13, 1689, he is noted working with master masons Michel Bouvier and Mathurin Colin. The hero Etienne, at the age of 25 years, marrier Adrienne Barbier, daughter of one of the first colonists of Montreal (Gilbert Barbier die Le Minime). Faillon wrote of Adrienne: "Another young person, after four years at the hospital, she entered the Hotel-dieu at 10 years where she enthusiastically wished to serve the Institute, she was withdrawn by her parents and married off to Etienne Truteau." Sister Morin wrote that "it serves God for she is the mother of a large family which she nourishes and raises in love and fear of Our Lord with structure and wisdom in all things." The Trudeau family was one of the most prolific of all the immigrant families of 1659.

Godfather and godmother Etienne Vilain and Catherine Boulliot.

Canadian ancestor of the Honorable Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.

This information came from Lyn Casey via e-mail:

The information on Etienne Trudeau comes from the 1667 Census in Montreal, Isle de Montreal, Quebec. The lineage can also be found in the Dictionnaire genealogique des familles du Quebec de origines a 1730 by Jette, Rene, Publication: Les Prs de l'Universite de Montreal, Montrealm 1983.
His occupation was listed as: maitre Carpentier de grosses oeuvres (master carpenter). He left La Rochelle, Anuis, France on June 8, 1659, and arrived in Montreal on September 29, 1659. His parents were married at La Notre de Cougne Church iance. His father died when he was eight years old, leaving his brothers Jean (age 20), Francois (age 14), and Martial (age 12).
The recruiting efforts of the Montreal Association, the hospital and Seminary of the Sulpicians in 1659 brought soldiers to defend the colony. Etienne was among the craftsmen to sign these contracts on June 8th, 1659 on front of the notary Dtreau in LaRochelle. Father de Queylus, a priest in Canada, was recruiting craftsmen to work for the St-Sulpice Seminary. Etienne's contract was for three years, and he was to receive 100 livres tournois (silver coins minted in France) per year, plus free lodging with Father Queylus.
At age 18, Etienne left for Montreal on the "St. Andre." The "St. Andre" as previously was used as a ship for the sick; it was a floating hospital for years. The ship was not properly sanitized, and many fell victim of the plague en route totreal. About 8 people fell ill and died during the voyage, and had to be thrown overboard. About 200 people made the crossing across the Atlantic to Montreal. These were the first colonists to settle on the high hill of the St. Lawrence, a town known as "Ville Marie."
Etienne settled on an 0.84 acre stretch on the outskirts of town in Longueuil. Etienne, master carpenter and a businessman, became involved in the early politics of Montreal because of his skills as a solider and carpenter. Etienne became ader under Corporal Gilbert Barbier (part of his 6th squad), and defended Montreal from the Iroquois during an attack in 1661. He later married the daughter of the corporal, Adrienne in 1667. In attendance was Charles Le Moyne, the Baron of Longueuil, a prominent Montreal statesman. (Le Moyne's son Pierre de Iberville and Jean Baptiste Bienville established Louisana several years later).
It seems from the contracts found by a Robert Trudeau from St. Paul Minnesota, that Etienne was more than a carpenter. He was placed in charge of many building projects, and acted today was like today's general contractor. We find evidence oer 30 contracts written in the text "Etienne Truteau, Maitre Charpentier." This activity involved buying and selling land, clearing it, then erecting the buildings. He had many hired hands. For example, he hired Antoine Regald, a master mason, on June 15th, 1675, "to do masonry work at a cost of 105 livres and three pints of 'd'eau de vie,'" the liquor of life! (2) In this way, our father Etienne built barns, houses, hospitals, and even a chapel for the Sisters of Notre Dame Congregation (1694). He became a successful businessman and many people owed him money for his building projects.
Although his children were explorers and voyagers, Etienne seemed to live more by the maxim "A Rolling Stone Never Gathers Moss." He certainly made a good living, and worked hard for it. In Longueuil, he lived on a 7 x 40 arpent of land in a-story house, with a barn, a stable with horses, a bread bakery, one big chicken coop, a pig stable and a beautiful fruit tree orchard.
In his later years, leased his land his son (and our grandfather) Charles. Later, Charles bought the land with an agreement for Charles to care for him. Etienne lived to the age of 71.
