Adélaïde Thibodeau is my great grandmother and I have gathered a considerable amount of information, original documents and photos about her. A competent professional genealogist and relative of mine explained that he accidentally started the unfounded rumor that Adélaïde was of amerindian origin because of her appearance in the group fotograph published on page 388 of "Les Acadiens du Québec" written and published by Pierre-Maurice Hébert at les Éditions de L'Écho, Montréal,1994. There are 20 persons in that photo and Adelaïde is standing next to Séraphin at the door of their house. All those in that photo are members of the Gaudet or Brault families, including my uncle Léo Brault.
The documents of the parish of St-Jacques-de-L'Achigan, near Joliette, province of Québec, show that Adélaïde Thibodeau was the biological daughter of Joseph Thibodeau and Marguerite Bro (sic). Adélaïde was born in Rawdon on May 24, 1835 and baptized on the next day in Saint-Jacques, in the presence of godparents Jos Robischau and Marie-Louise Bourgeois. Adelaïde became an orphan when her mother Marguerite died February 10, 1837 (Marguerite was then only 26 years old). I also have copies of documents of Notary Joseph Dufresne who was assigned by a Montréal Judge to organize a family meeting to elect a tutor who would see to the well being and defend the succession rights of Adélaïde.The same notary prepared an inventory and administered her succession when Adélaïde married Séraphin Gaudet on September 12, 1853.
