Après avoir vécu pendant quelques années à Ste-Élisabeth puis plusieurs années à Joliette, Dieudonné tente sa chance aux États. Il quitta Joliette avec sa famille quelque part après 1872 pour s'établir à Fall River, Massachusetts. Mais l'aventure américaine sera de courte durée car il est de retour à St-Côme en 1880.
Dieudonné s'est établi sur une terre pas trop fertile, à St-Côme. En mars 1885, avec son fils Lactance, il quitte St-Côme en direction du Témiscamingue. Ils font le trajet de Montréal à Mattawa par train, puis se sera un trajet de 150 km en raquettes pour se rendre jusqu'au Fort Témiscamingue. Ils longent ensuite la Petite rivière Blanche sur 16 autres kilomètres avant de se choisir un lot dans ce qui deviendra plus tard la mission St-Placide, puis le village de Béarn. Lactance demeure sur place alors que Dieudonné retourne à St-Côme pour ramener la famille. Il sera de retour 2 ans plus tard, mais en été cette fois-ci, en mai 1887. Son fils Joseph ne sera pas du voyage car sa femme Égérie venait tout juste d'accoucher. - Partir : les lettres de Pit Bellehumeur, Fernand Bellehumeur.

Béarn fête ses 100 ans en juin 2012. Il faut savoir qu’il y avait des gens dans le coin depuis 1885. Voici les débuts avant les débuts. L’arrivée de Dieudonné Bellehumeur (47 ans) et de son fils Lactance (22 ans) à la limite des cantons Laverlochère, Duhamel et Fabre officialise le début de la paroisse de St-Placide à l’époque. Ils arriveront par la petite rivière Blanche et s’installeront près de l’Amérindien, Pierre Le Loup. Ils s’établiront sur ces terres riches pour l’agriculture, mais continueront de vendre leurs fourrures au comptoir de la Baie d’Hudson au Fort Témiscamingue. Les Bellehumeur ont fondé Béarn mais très tôt les Gaudet l'ont peuplé. En effet, Lactance Bellehumeur accompagnait son père Dieudonné Bellehumeur lors de la fondation de Béarn en 1885. Les femmes étant rares au Témiscamingue, Lactance retourne à St-Côme en 1890 pendant plus d'un an. Il courtise Julie Gaudet qu'il épousera à St-Côme en 1891, une des treize enfants de Séraphin Gaudet et d'Adélaïde Thibodeau de St-Côme et ensuite de St-Donat. Le 8 septembre 1900, 22 personnes, soit les familles de 4 frères et soeurs de Julie Gaudet, arrivent à Béarn. La population de Béarn passe donc de 36 à 58. Israël Gaudet, Jean-Louis Gaudet, Théophile Brault (Odile Gaudet) et Élie Gaudet (Hermine Gaudet) accompagnés de leurs épouses et enfants. Pour faire vivre leurs familles, Jean-Louis, Israël et Théophile Brault sont presque tout de suite allés travailler dans les chantiers de bois jusqu'aux Fêtes. Élie Gaudet, tant qu'à lui, trouve du boulot sur la ferme d'Isidore Therrien, à Lorrainville. En 1901, deux autres enfants de Séraphin, Odilon dit Borden et Herméline (Almanzar Brault) montent aussi à Béarn; peu après Séraphin et Adélaïde vont les rejoindre. Deux autres de leurs enfants suivront leur exemple : Camila, une célibataire, qui sera servante du curé Lachapelle à partir de 1914, et Joseph qui s'installera à Ville-Marie. D'autres Gaudet, des cousins, fils de Prosper, des régions des Laurentides et Lanaudière ont aussi déménagées au Témiscamingue en 1902, Léon, et 1904, Anthime. Puis leur père Prosper décide de suivre ses fils et son frère Séraphine, avec sa épouse Louise Richard et ses autres fils, David et Albert.

Au Québec, dans les années 1880, un grave crise économique sévit. Comme beaucoup d'autres, le père de Joseph, Dieudonnée, s'exile aux États-Unis, espérant trouver du travail dans les usines, notamment de coton. De retour au pays, alors que sa famille s'installe à St-Côme, Joseph épousera Égérie Dufresne.
En mars 1889, le couple vient rejoindre son père et ses enfants qui se sont établis à Béarn.
En mars 1914, à 53 ans, il quitte sa femme et laisse ses 13 enfants, dont 6 encore en bas âge, la plus jeune n'ayant que 3 ans. Il laisse aussi derrière lui beaucoup de dettes pour s'expatrier seul à Jarvie en Alberta, une centaine de kilomètre au nord d'Edmonton, sans en dire mot à quiconque. Il aurait traverser le pont de glace sur le lac Témiscamingue pour se rendre en Ontario où il aurait vendu son cheval et aurait "pawner" son manteau de fourrure afin de se payer un billet de train. On dit qu'il aurait toujours voulu aller vivre dans l'Ouest.
C'est là-bas qu''en 1916, sa fille la plus âgée, Éva, réussit à le retracer après avoir envoyé une multitude le lettres aux curés de différentes paroisses.
Plusieurs photos dans mes archives, dont une photo avec une cinquantaine d'individus lors de leurs noces d'argent.

À Béarn, il a toujours été considéré comme un trappeur, un chasseur et un pêcheur de métier, donc un homme de la forêt. Lorsque le Béarn a commencé à prendre trop d'expansion à son goût, il a préféré vendre sa maison et son lot et il est allé se réfugier au fond du rang 9, plus près de la nature sauvage. En 1929, à l'instar de son frère Joseph dit Pit en 1914, sans avertissement, il s'embarque à bord d'un train vers une destination inconnue, abandonnant femme et famille. In approx. 1906 the whole family pulled up roots, heading for Saskatchewan where the government was giving free homesteads. They travelled by train to Mortlach and sixty miles beyond in three covered waggons, Grandma told my mom there were big iron pots dangling on the sides of the waggons. The prairie story is another very long story, they had built a sod house and started pioneering all over again, till they finally moved to Edmonton when their land became the dust bowl. My uncle told me the story that one day their soil was in their neighbours yard and visa versa next day. They knew nothing about crop rotation and exhausted the soil.

Off to Edmonton where I was born. I and my mother had lived with my grandparents as I had been an illegitimate child, my mother married when I was three, had other children. My stepfather didn’t much like me much so I spent most of my time at my grand parents house. I was happy as long as I had a little pair of scissors and a bottle of thick white paste and a scrap book.

There was lots of action at Grandmas, lots of parties and fiddle music. Grandma always made her own liquor, there was a room in the house I wasn’t allowed in, knew there was a barrel of salt pork, as French Canadians that was staple food, barrels of other foods and I suppose Grandmas liquor making paraphernalia.

You can imagine the hard life she had bearing all those children and working so hard. In Saskatchewan, she opened a boarding house and a meat market. She fed the thrashing crews, had jugs of cream from her sons farms. Apparently at other farms they served only bologna sandwiches and we fed well.

I loved my grandmother, she became my best friend, I slept with her when I was there. Not long ago, my relatives reminded me she had become very child like, probably why we got along so well. Guess today it would be called senile. I actually slept with her the night she passed away when I was five years old. We woke up and she had died peacefully in the night. She stayed in the front bedroom in a casket for awhile, there were lots of candles and relatives. I remember I never cried, just in awe of all the activity. Then she disappeared.

The day she died the daughters took her feather bed and shook it out in the yard, her broad gold wedding band fell on the ground. I was there. She always said if ever it were found, it was for me.

In a child like moment I suppose she had tucked it into the feather bed and then forgot. Money and gold rings were valuable and rare in those depression years. They had badgered her a bit to try and coax what she had done with it, it didn’t work.

She had lived a full life at seventy one.
