42010 | WFT - Family Archives CD #75, Tree #0553: From James Carten - The Kirkes Many of us have heard the story of Helene Desportes, the first white child born in New France and how she left Quebec at a young age, returning to France when she was not much older. Inm many cases the only part of the story that we have been told is that she left, "when the Kirke brothers took Quebec". But what was this "taking" of Quebec and who were the Kirke brothers? As with most of the serious confrontations on this side of the Atlantic, this one was the result of wars waged in Europe. England claimed much of the same lands in the New World as France did. OIn Europe, France was waging all-out war on the Huguenots [Protestants]. It seemed that France and England were opposed to everything about each other and in 1627, war was formally declared. A British fleet was sent to help lift the siege of LaRochelle, the Huguenots stronhold. At the same time, there was much going onconcerning the two countries colonial holdings in the Americas. Gervais Kirke, a fervently loyal Scotsman an Presbyterian, had married a French woman and raised 5 sons in Dieppe, on the Chanel Coast about 50 miles north of Rouen. This patriarch had always taken interest in affairs concerning North America and his sons may have inherited this interest. Gervais Kirke's sons included David, Louis [refered to as Lewis in most English records], Thomas, john and James. David'd daughter, Mary, was also linked to the New World when she married the intrepid Canadian fur trader, Pierre-Esprit Radisson. In 1633, Champlain returned to Quebec as the King's commander. This meant he had official support from the French crown. The next year, the 13 yr. old Helene Desportes also returned, and accompanied by her aunt and uncle. Marguerite Langlois and Abraham Martin of the Plains of Abraham fame. That same year, at 14 years of age, Helene Desportes was married to Guillaume Hebert, with whom she had 3 children before being widowed at 19. At 20 years, Desportes married Noel Morin and had 12 more children including the first native born priest and first native born nun in Canada. She died in 1675, thirteen days before her fifty-fifth birthday. [Helene Desportes mother was Francios Langlois, sister of Marguerite]. 42031 | William Campbell was born in Scotland and was most likely a member of Fraser's 78th Highlanders. This Highlander regiment fought the French during the French and Indian War at some key battles: Louisbourg and Quebec. At Quebec, on the plains of Abraham, the 78th was directly on the front lines and took many casualties. There are two William Campbell's in Capt. Archibald Campbell's company listed as privates. Neither William is listed as staying in Canada after the war. In addition, there is an Ensign Alexander Campbell who is listed as staying in Canada and purportedly went by the name William. The unit was disbanded in 1763 and many of the members received land grants in Nova Scotia and in the Montreal area. There is an unsubstantiated story that William and his son Guillaume-Alexander may have moved across the border and fought for the American side during the American Revolution. This has yet to be researched. The following details were given verbally by Annette Agnes Campbell (born 1885) as told to her by her great-uncle Benoni (born 1805) who knew William Alexander and his story: "William came to Quebec with the Fraser Highlanders in 1759 to fight for the English against the French regiments of Montcalm at the plains of Abraham. It seems that after the war he was not allowed to return to Scotland having opposed fighting the French regiments possibly knowing that Scotsmen were on Montcalm's side because of the Auld Alliance. William married Josephte Chartier at a yet unknown site then settled at Laprairie, later at Ruisseau des Noyan (L'Acadie, Quebec) where he raised his family. He had adopted the Catholic religion. William Campbell died at L'Acadie. The funeral was held on March 3, 1811. He was reported to be 80 years old, born possibly in Edinburgh in 1731. At his death, William lived with his son Alexander William". Also the following reference: One of the Campbells who chose to be discharged in Canada was William Campbell, who was born in 1731 in Edinburgh. He was a member of Captain Archibald Campbell’s company. He married Josephine Chartier from St Pierre les Becquets and settled first at Laprairie, Quebec and then at l’Acadie near St Jean Quebec. In 1992 one of his many francophone descendants is Dr Maurice Campbell of Trois Rivieres (Cap de la Madeleine) a member of the Quebec Chapter of the Clan Campbell Society of North America.†The above has been extracted [p. 33] from “Lords of the North (1997) by James K. McDonell & Robert B. Campbell. William is buried a Ste. Marguerite de Blairfindie in L'Acadie, Quebec. The grave is unmarked which his descendants hope to rectify soon. rev. 9/01/2001 SOURCE - http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/a/m/Dennis-D-Campbell/GENE1-0001.html | CAMPBELL, William Alexander, Guillaume (I31994)
